The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) uses the information collected from railroads to gather accurate data in order to develop better strategies and solutions to the problems of grade crossing device malfunctions and signal system failures. FRA and railroad use this information to lessen the risk of accidents/incidents at highway-rail grade crossings. This information collection is mandatory, submitted as needed, and there is a requirement for recordkeeping.
